Things. We have enabled connectivity for them since 2001.
Throughout the years, we have developed a portfolio of connectivity, policy and monetization functions that are well-suited for IoT application enablement. Aptilo brings IoT applications to life and helps our customers and their customers take full advantage of their IoT investments.
Aptilo’s role in the IoT ecosystem
An investment in Internet-of-things (IoT) should always be driven by a business decision. There are many business drivers such as:
- Making the organization more effective
- Streamlining and rationalizing operations
- Increasing customer satisfaction
- Differentiating the business from competitors
IoT is all about increasing profitability.
We divide an IoT implementation into four levels, each with their respective sublevels. It starts with the endpoints or all the “things” connected to the internet.
Endpoints are connected to the network level, where we mainly find different radio technologies.
The network level connects the endpoints to the IoT application enablement level – the IoT platform. This is where the endpoints are authenticated and data are aggregated. Logic is created to make decisions. Actions are triggered based on the data from the endpoints or input from other systems. Analytics, monetization and integration with other systems are also features that are usually managed at this level. This level can also be served by a mixture of different IoT application enablement platforms working together.
All the previously mentioned layers are needed to enable the IoT application layer. Working in concert with the application IoT enablement platform is where the IoT magic happens.
Aptilo’s IoT solution is all about IoT application enablement. We act as a glue between level 2 (networks) and 4 (applications). When it comes to security, you are covered. Secure connectivity in demanding environments is one of the things we do best.
Simply put, Aptilo helps you enable, secure and monetize IoT services. The Aptilo Service Management Platform™ (SMP), trusted by more than 100 operators, intelligently connects “things” with IoT applications.
IoT security with Aptilo’s IoT application enablement platform
The distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Internet in October 2016 was caused by swarms of data requests from a network of hundreds of thousands of hacked IoT endpoints. Security is currently one of the hottest topics within IoT. Due to the way IoT applications are built, they introduce a wide range of new security risks and challenges. All the way from the endpoints, via networks and platforms, and other systems to which the platforms are connected.
Aptilo offers a suite of ways to enhance IoT security across the four levels. We deliver secure authentication and policies authorizing endpoints. We control their access, what they are allowed to do and get access to. If the IoT application or endpoint are compromised, at least they cannot do much harm with Aptilo SMP covering your back. Aptilo can further enhance the security level integrating with 3rd party security solutions from partners in the IoT eco-system.
Why do you need Aptilo’s IoT application enablement platform?
Until now, in IoT there has been a flurry of devices working independently, on their own proprietary IoT platforms. For example, you can turn the heat on in your Volvo with your smartphone. There’s a platform taking care of that and nothing else.
To meet the massive scale of IoT services and the multitude of different IoT applications, there is a need for a highly scalable and robust horizontal layer of reusable common IoT application enablement functions. Functions such as authentication, provisioning, data aggregation, action management, monetization.
This horizontal approach shortens the time-to-market and lowers the deployment cost of IoT. It also enables connections and information exchange between heterogeneous IoT endpoints and connectivity networks and various IoT applications.
This trend will also facilitate the ability for telco operators to add value to the IoT ecosystem by offering both connectivity and those horizontal functions.
This is where Aptilo comes in.
A proven and trusted platform adapted for IoT
Our award-winning Aptilo Service Management Platform™ (SMP) has been deployed by service providers and large enterprises in more than 75 countries. In fact, some of our customers have used our platform for M2M communication long before the IoT term was invented.
Although our platform is agnostic to the access technology, we have been mostly known as the leader in Wi-Fi service management.
Our background in Wi-Fi also serves us well in the IoT space. Wi-Fi is already an important technology for providing backhaul for IoT devices. It is expected that only a few years from now, the average home will have more than 50 devices connected to Internet. Being the dominating connectivity method for indoor coverage in homes and enterprises, Wi-Fi will become one of the most important transport technologies for IoT. Just imagine when the installed base of millions of Wi-Fi access points has built-in support for IoT. Furthermore, the additional cost to add different sensors such as temperature and smoke sensors into the Wi-Fi access point is relatively low. A number of vendors are already adding those sensors into their access points.
In a few years we will see low power / long range Wi-Fi, so-called Wi-Fi HaLow, entering the same market as existing radio technologies such as LoRA and Sigfox.
But of course, we do not put all our bets for IoT connectivity soley on Wi-Fi. The IoT connectivty that prevail will be selected based on a number of parameterts and may be different for different applications. This is why we have added specific IoT application enablement functions and a flexible interface concept to support any kind of IoT application regardless of connectivity networks. With other words, it is up to you which connectivity method you prefer whether it be LPWAN connectivity such as LoRa, Sigfox and HaLow or Wi-Fi or NB-IoT or something else. In addition, we have also built a multitenancy architecture so you can provide IoT application enablement services to many customers from the same platform.
We call this new flavour of our platform Aptilo SMPIoT.
IoT application enablement – cloud or no cloud?
Security and privacy pervade the IoT industry. It is crucial to prevent manipulation of IoT applications and unauthorized access to yours or your customers’ Big Data. Whether an on-premises or a cloud based platform is required to fulfil your functional and security requirements is up to you to determine. With a solution from Aptilo you have the choise to select any option for your operations. The Aptilo SMPIoT delivered from the cloud or on-premise gives you the freedom to go for an application enablement platform where you can be in full control of your data. If you want help from Aptilo’s experts to run the platform, you can utilize the Aptilo Managed Service™.
When you are in full control of your IoT application enablement platform, you can offer more tailor-made services that have a better fit for your customers. Are you an operator already providing connectivity? Your own IoT platform will give you an opportunity to climb up in the IoT value chain. You may also reduce your business-to-business churn by being a more complete service provider. IoT services will boost your growth and bottom line.
Most IoT applications such as smart cities, smart homes and eHealth are local. Local customers require local and instant support. This will make you as a service provider an excellent choice since you already have an existing support structure in place.
How can you benefit from Aptilo’s application enablement platform?
The Aptilo SMPIoT matches the data streams from the endpoints with a given set of rules to trigger different events and actions. Your IoT applications are brought to life with a reasonable effort and with low operational cost.
You may take advantage of all the application enablement functions in the Aptilo SMPIoT framework to power your IoT applications. Alternatively, you can pick any of the functions you need to complement missing functionality in an existing platform. This flexibility, combined with the proven stability and scalability, makes the Aptilo SMPIoT unique in the market place.
Regardless of who you are, we have an Aptilo SMPIoT configuration that is just right for you:
- Telecom service provider offering value-added IoT services.
- Telecom service provider offering unified connectivity for IoT.
- System integrator offering IoT applications.
- Enterprise with company-specific IoT applications
- IoT platform provider lacking a piece in the IoT puzzle.
