Istanbul City Wi-Fi Wins Smart Cities Award, Based on Aptilo Technology

Istanbul City Wi-Fi Wins Smart Cities Award, Based on Aptilo Technology

October 19, 2020/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi /by Johan Terve

One of the world’s largest municipality Wi-Fi deployments

STOCKHOLM – October 19,  2020 – The Istanbul city Wi-Fi service, enabled by a solution from Aptilo Networks, has won the Telecoms World Smart Cities Award. The network has around 8,000 access points. Every year, 16 million citizens and 10 million visitors get access to a high-capacity Wi-Fi service.

The administration of Istanbul needed a Wi-Fi service that could scale and provide various stakeholders with advanced functionality. The Aptilo Service Management Platform™ with its Venue Wi-Fi Manager™ multitenancy functionality fulfilled all the requirements.

“With a Wi-Fi network that looks and behaves like a large operator network, we needed a carrier-class solution,” said Erol Özgüner, CIO Istanbul City. “With Aptilo’s advanced functionality for cellular- and Wi-Fi-based IoT connectivity, we already have today the foundation to enter the Internet-of-everything era.”

Users of the Istanbul Wi-Fi service get high bandwidth and short response times wherever they are. There are up to five different quota buckets that control the data consumption and that can be used at different types of locations. The solution from Aptilo keeps track of where the users access the Wi-Fi service and applies the right bucket depending on the location.

The multitenancy functionality in Aptilo’s platform makes it possible for Istanbul city to tailor the look and feel for the different venues. Through banner areas at the login portal, users can get the latest information for that location and view advertisements.

Furthermore, quality-of-service control and quota profiles can be adjusted by location and user group, and for special dates such as national holidays.

“This advanced large-scale Wi-Fi service and the grand vision for the future make Istanbul city a worthy winner of the award,” said Paul Mikkelsen, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “We are very proud to have been part of the project and to have contributed to its success.”

Swedavia Enhances Their Wi-Fi Service and Moves to the Cloud with Aptilo

July 1, 2020/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi, IoT /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – July 1,  2020 – Swedavia, the state-owned Swedish Airport developer and operator, has further enhanced their Wi-Fi service and moved to the cloud with Aptilo Networks.

The ten largest airports in Sweden, with 42 million passengers yearly, are owned and operated by Swedavia. Since 2005, Swedavia has put their trust in Aptilo’s experts managing the Wi-Fi service from servers in Swedavia’s data center.

Now Swedavia has renewed the contract for another three years and is moving from in-house operations to the Aptilo private cloud offering on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Swedavia can now use the latest Aptilo features for Wi-Fi marketing, analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT). This includes the new Wi-Fi access method using an icon-based survey. It provides enhanced insights about the user with the smallest user effort. The login page (Wi-Fi Captive Portal) is split into several screens. The user provides data by clicking on icons, rushing on to the next page. One of Aptilo’s other airport customers gained 15% more Wi-Fi users overnight by using this approach instead of a traditional login.

“We are proud to have earned Swedavia’s trust for another three years,” said Paul Mikkelsen, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “We will continue to help them deliver state-of-the-art connectivity services at their airports. It is also wonderful that Swedavia has joined our cloud-first strategy. Our new IoT offerings, Aptilo Wi-Fi Zero-touch and Aptilo IoT CCS, are both by default delivered as services on AWS.”

Batelco and Aptilo Networks Partner for First-Class Wi-Fi Services in Bahrain

March 2, 2020/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Offload /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – March 2, 2020 – Batelco, the leading digital solutions provider in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and Aptilo Networks have entered into a partnership to deliver business-to-business (B2B) or (B2B2C) Wi-Fi services in Bahrain. Batelco has selected the Aptilo Service Management Platform™ (SMP) with the Aptilo SMP Venue Wi-Fi Manager™ to deploy a nationwide managed Wi-Fi service.

Batelco offers managed venue Wi-Fi services to enterprise customers, with the service deployed either on top of the customer’s existing Wi-Fi equipment or as a fully managed service with the Wi-Fi infrastructure included.

Batelco General Manager Enterprise Abderrahmane Mounir said, “We were looking for a vendor agnostic solution that could match our high ambitions in scaling our Wi-Fi business both in terms of volume and functionality, and at the same time have a platform that will allow Batelco and its enterprise customers to engage with the Wi-Fi users.”

“Aptilo’s proven track-record in innovation and stability makes them the right choice for us to support the growing demands of our enterprise customers,” he added.

Furthermore, Batelco will deploy an additional Wi-Fi connection (SSID) exclusively for Batelco subscribers at most public locations. When Batelco mobile subscribers switch on their Wi-Fi, they will instantaneously connect to the secure Wi-Fi network at these locations. It is the SIM-authentication functionality of the Aptilo SMP that makes the Wi-Fi network as secure and seamless as any mobile network.

“Operator managed Wi-Fi is crucial not only as a profitable business but also to get indoor footprint for subscribers. This will become increasingly important in the 5G era,” said Anders Emilsson, VP Sales Middle East & Africa, Aptilo Networks.

“We are proud that Bahrain’s leading operator has selected us. Their insights in the market and the dynamics of Wi-Fi will make them very successful,” he added.

Aptilo named Best Wi-Fi Network Technology at WBA Industry Awards

October 8, 2019/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – October 8, 2019 – Aptilo Networks has won the 2019 WBA Industry awards in the Best Wi-Fi Network Technology category, for the Aptilo Virtual Service Provider™ (Virtual SP) solution.

The WBA Annual Industry Awards have been recognizing and celebrating innovations and achievements in the Wi-Fi ecosystem for the past 7 years.

With the Aptilo Virtual SP solution, the operator achieves a highly standardized and scalable way to sell managed corporate LAN and Wi-Fi services. Both direct and through channels.

The operator can leverage one Wi-Fi SSID and one LAN while allowing each of their business customers to act as a virtual service provider. Business customers handle the daily operations towards their own business or residential customers (tenants). Tenants get their own private Wi-Fi network with secure access to internal networked resources such as printers and servers. It’s just as if they had their own network. Tenants can also administer their users, through Aptilo’s hierarchical multi-tenancy functionality.

The Aptilo Virtual SP concept is ideal for operators that want to address verticals such as Real Estate, Co-Working Offices, Apartment owners (MDU) and Shopping malls. These verticals all have the need to provide multiple tenants with their own private network and Wi-Fi service.

“Operators have mainly sold Guest Wi-Fi services to their business customers and have avoided corporate IT-services. It has been too costly to set up and maintain multiple private networks to tenants,” said Paul Mikkelsen, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “With Aptilo’s virtual service provider concept, it’s finally possible for service providers to also scale their managed corporate Wi-Fi services. That’s why we call it B2B Wi-Fi 2.0.”

Aptilo was also a finalist for two additional 2019 WBA Awards categories. Aptilo shared the nomination for Best Wi-Fi Network Operator with their customer Telus in Canada. The Aptilo Zero-touch Wi-Fi IoT Connectivity was nominated in the Best Enterprise Wi-Fi Network category.

Aptilo launches WiFi4EU plug-and-play service

Aptilo Launches a WiFi4EU Plug-and-Play Service for Municipalities

September 19, 2019/in Cloud, Guest Wi-Fi /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – September 19, 2019 – Aptilo Networks announces the launch of a plug-and-play service for municipalities taking part in the WiFi4EU initiative. Aptilo’s new service provides login portals for the WiFi4EU public Wi-Fi service and takes care of the consent and personal data management required by GDPR.

The European Commission’s WiFi4EU initiative promotes free Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens and visitors in public spaces everywhere in Europe. Municipalities can apply for a 15,000 EUR voucher for purchase of equipment and installation.

WiFi4EU requires the municipality to provide a login portal for the Wi-Fi service. The portal needs to integrate with the WiFi4EU back-end to display the official WiFi4EU banner and count the number of users.

Another requirement is that a user stays connected for 12 hours after login. To achieve this, the user’s unique device ID (MAC address) is used to reconnect the user. Many European countries consider the MAC address to be personal data. To comply with these local legislations and GDPR, the login portal must collect the user’s consent to save their MAC address.

The Aptilo Guest Wi-Fi Cloud™ service offers municipalities peace of mind by taking care of these requirements for a reasonable monthly fee. The cloud service works on top of the municipality’s Wi-Fi infrastructure. It provides login portals that anyone – even someone without web development skills – can design, maintain and assign to different locations. The plug-and-play plugin for WiFi4EU takes care of all the login requirements. Aptilo’s award-winning consent and personal data management solution makes sure that the municipality is compliant with GDPR. The optional marketing package allows municipalities to communicate with citizens through the login portal, SMS and email.
