Aptilo IoT CCS winner at GLOTEL Awards 2020 for Most Innovative Cloud Service

Aptilo IoT CCS Wins Award for Most Innovative Cloud Service

November 12, 2020/in IoT /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – November 12, 2020 – Aptilo Networks has won an award for its IoT Connectivity Control Service™ (IoT CCS). It was named Most Innovative Cloud Service at the annual Global Telecoms Awards, one of the industry’s premier award programs, recognizing innovation and excellence that help advance and transform the telecom industry.

The Aptilo IoT CCS is a groundbreaking service delivered on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. For this service, the Aptilo Service Management Platform™ is handling the control plane, while Fortinet’s secure SD-WAN is handling the data plane.

Using the Aptilo IoT CCS, mobile operators can leave the mobile core network untouched while creating innovative, secure, and optimized IoT connectivity services. This task is a major challenge in a strict 3GPP standards-based environment.

Furthermore, the solution adds a flexible and future-proof IoT connectivity control layer on top of any mobile core network. This means that operators can deliver the IoT services in days rather than months, at a fraction of the current costs. It also reduces the cost of daily operations to a minimum, and enterprise customers can manage IoT services in a self-service portal.

Onboarding new customers with private Access Point Name (APN) connections has been greatly facilitated too. Previously, this could take weeks for mobile operators, but with the Aptilo IoT CCS Multitenancy Virtual APN concept, it can be done automatically in a matter of seconds.

“We knew that IoT CCS brings unique value to mobile operators that want to innovate in the field of IoT,” said Paul Mikkelsen, SVP Aptilo Business Unit at Enea. “However, winning such a broad category as the Most Innovative Cloud Service, in competition with so many brilliant companies, makes us immensely proud.”

This was the third award win for Aptilo IoT CCS. Earlier this year, Aptilo and Fortinet won the Telecoms World Awards for Best Partnership and Compass Intelligence selected Aptilo IoT CCS for the 2020 IoT Innovator award in Intelligent Connectivity.

Swedavia Enhances Their Wi-Fi Service and Moves to the Cloud with Aptilo

July 1, 2020/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Guest Wi-Fi, IoT /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – July 1,  2020 – Swedavia, the state-owned Swedish Airport developer and operator, has further enhanced their Wi-Fi service and moved to the cloud with Aptilo Networks.

The ten largest airports in Sweden, with 42 million passengers yearly, are owned and operated by Swedavia. Since 2005, Swedavia has put their trust in Aptilo’s experts managing the Wi-Fi service from servers in Swedavia’s data center.

Now Swedavia has renewed the contract for another three years and is moving from in-house operations to the Aptilo private cloud offering on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Swedavia can now use the latest Aptilo features for Wi-Fi marketing, analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT). This includes the new Wi-Fi access method using an icon-based survey. It provides enhanced insights about the user with the smallest user effort. The login page (Wi-Fi Captive Portal) is split into several screens. The user provides data by clicking on icons, rushing on to the next page. One of Aptilo’s other airport customers gained 15% more Wi-Fi users overnight by using this approach instead of a traditional login.

“We are proud to have earned Swedavia’s trust for another three years,” said Paul Mikkelsen, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “We will continue to help them deliver state-of-the-art connectivity services at their airports. It is also wonderful that Swedavia has joined our cloud-first strategy. Our new IoT offerings, Aptilo Wi-Fi Zero-touch and Aptilo IoT CCS, are both by default delivered as services on AWS.”

Confirmed interoperability between Aptilo Zero-touch IoT Connectivity and Espresif ESP 32

Aptilo and Espressif Confirm End-to-End Interoperability for Zero-touch Wi-Fi IoT

March 12, 2020/in Carrier Wi-Fi, IoT /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM – March 12, 2020 – Aptilo Networks and Espressif Systems announced end-to-end interoperability between Espressif’s popular ESP32 SoC platform and Aptilo Zero-touch Wi-Fi IoT Connectivity™ (Aptilo Wi-Fi Zero-touch) for AWS IoT Core.

Aptilo Wi-Fi Zero-touch effectively removes the two hurdles of a mass market for Wi-Fi-based IoT: the issue of manual onboarding of IoT devices to the Wi-Fi network and the security concerns of an open Wi-Fi network.

Aptilo Wi-Fi Zero-touch is delivered as a connectivity control service running on Amazon Web Services (AWS). It utilizes the X.509 client certificates that already exist in the IoT device, as an identity token for AWS IoT Core, to also automatically connect the IoT device to a secure Wi-Fi network SSID (802.1x).

“We are thrilled to work with AWS and to have verified interoperability with Espressif, a leading supplier of Wi-Fi modules for IoT,” said Jan Sjonell, VP IoT, Aptilo Networks. “By eliminating onboarding and security obstacles for devices connecting to Wi-Fi networks, an increased number of manufacturers of IoT devices will from now on choose Wi-Fi instead of other short-range radio technologies for IoT connectivity.”

“Using the common authentication for Wi-Fi infrastructure and cloud connectivity improves the security, manageability and user experience of onboarding connected devices. This provides an added value to internet service providers who offer connected devices as a service based on our popular ESP32 platform,” said Swee-Ann Teo, Founder and CEO of Espressif Systems.
