STOCKHOLM — Aptilo Networks wins a deal in Malaysia when the Malaysian operator, TM Net Sdn Bhd, makes a nationwide investment in wireless Internet connections via WLAN in public places. For the first phase of the project Aptilo has received an order for 1,000 hotspots, 300 of which will be delivered this year.
Malaysia has aggressive plans to compete with Singapore and South Korea to become Asia’s leading IT nation. Part of its investment includes setting up thousands of so-called hotspots for wireless Internet access in public places throughout the country. Aptilo received a contract with one of two consortiums that will implement the installations through its partner Mutiara.com mainly covering the northern part of Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
“This deal means a great deal to us and will justify Asia Pacific as an emerging hotspot market that Aptilo will continue to go after,” says Torbjörn Wård, CEO at Aptilo Networks.
The process has taken a long time, and the technology has been thoroughly tested and evaluated against the competition with solutions from all of the big players in the industry. State-run Telekom Malaysia’s ISP subsidiary TM Net Sdn Bhd will operate the network, and Aptilo’s solution will be used to administer users, Internet access, and payments. TM Net is currently negotiating with the owners of potential locations that include airports, hotels and café chains, among other businesses, to set up hotspots at thousands of locations throughout the country.
“The thing that tipped the decision in Aptilo’s favor was the flexible functionality that was a good fit for TM Net’s needs. In addition to the great variety of other functionalities that make it possible for TM Net to choose other business models in the future,” says TM Net’s CEO Dato’ Baharum Salleh.
