Aptilo Networks Behind the Expansion of SkiStar Winternet

March 7, 2007/in Guest Wi-Fi /by Johan Terve

STOCKHOLM — Aptilo Networks has previously delivered a system for access control to SkiStar´s guest network in their Swedish ski resorts Åre and Sälen. For this season, the guest network has been expanded to include several lodging and cabin areas in Vemdalen and has also been complemented with roaming via IPASS. With the use of Aptilo Guest Internet Access Service, all the guests staying in cabins connected to the SkiStar Winternet can buy online Internet access.

SkiStar Winternet, which SkiStar has chosen to call its wireless guest network, was introduced for the 2005/2006 season in Åre and Sälen has been expanded for this season to include several lodging and cabin areas in Vemdalen. The guests can access the Internet by buying a time-limited user account which can be paid for online using a credit card or by buying a voucher at one of the receptions. Compared with modem connections, Winternet has not only an increased speed but also the flexibility that notebook computers can be used anywhere in the cottages.

The success and high degree of usability is explained by the fact that both parents and children needs to keep in contact with the world around them and using all existing services on the Internet, such as games, literature, films, etc.

“We searched for a robust, flexible solution which did not require our administration. Aptilo´s platform met and exceeded all our demands and has shown itself to be the solid system we hoped for. Our future plans now, are to expand `SkiStar Winternet´ to include all our destinations, with better and a more extensive covering than today,” said Peter Larsson, IT Manager at SkiStar.

“We are proud of being able to supplying our services and our service platform to Ski Star. The fact that SkiStar has chosen an operator-neutral solution to be run under their own management means that they have unique flexibility when designing their range of services. This flexibility means also that SkiStar will be able to optimize the return on their investment,” said Paul Mikkelsen, Sales Manager at Aptilo Networks.

SkiStar Winternet has been projected and implemented by Aptilo´s reseller, TDC Dotcom. The Network´s infrastructure has been built with products from Cisco Systems, Aptilo´s technological partner.
