AFRICACOM – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – Aptilo Networks, the global leader in pre-integrated solutions for control of billing, user services and access in wireless networks including Wi-Fi, WiMAX™ and LTE, has been selected by DiscoveryTel Ghana (DTG), a licensed data services provider in Ghana, for the deployment of the first 4G network in the country.
The 4G network provides high-speed, high-capacity broadband wireless to corporate, business and residential users in Accra, the capital and largest city of Ghana with a population of 2 million, and other major Ghanaian cities.
Aptilo’s solution was provided by INTRACOM TELECOM which is building the turnkey mobile 4G network. They are utilizing the Aptilo Service Management Platform™, the first pre-integrated, ready-to-deploy wireless broadband policy and service control (AAA) solution for 4G networks.
The solution opens up new market opportunities for DiscoveryTel Ghana, which can act as a wholesale service provider by creating prepaid volume accounts that can be sold to retailers such as hotels, airports or convention centers. Aptilo also enables a multitude of business models and advanced policy control ensuring superior bandwidth availability at all times.
Additionally, Aptilo’s Service Management Platform will serve as a foundation to enable a future Wi-Fi hotspot network through partners, providing a cost-effective means to connect Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Ghana with a 4G infrastructure as backhaul.
“Achieving ROI and reducing time to market was essential. We needed a high capacity, resilient network for government, banks, hotels and other enterprises as well as residents. Aptilo and INTRACOM provided the ideal solution,” said Kofi Datsa, General Manager, DiscoveryTel Ghana. “Aptilo added intelligence to the network, positioning us for future success with new revenue streams today and a proven solution for our partners’ Wi-Fi rollout later on.”
Aptilo’s advanced scheduling feature allows DiscoveryTel Ghana to control access and bandwidth for different users and user groups at different times.
“Aptilo’s time-of-day and day-of-week scheduling of allocation of bandwidth for different user groups allows us to maximize the utilization of our core network and Internet backhaul, while moving from a post-paid to pre-paid environment,” said Steve Toro, CTO, DiscoveryTel Ghana.
Aptilo’s Service Management System features multi-access, multi-service support for management of bundled data and multimedia services over WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks within the same platform. It is based on the Aptilo AAA+ (Authentication, Authorization and Accounting) Server, which provides service management, access control (including intelligent roaming), policy management and advanced billing capabilities (such as prepaid and hotlining) for wireless and fixed networks.
“DiscoveryTel Ghana is a role model for 4G network deployments in emerging markets, which require fast, cost-effective deployments that set the operator up for success with new revenue opportunities, the ability to expand service area and the capability to evolve to new technologies down the road,” said Torbjorn Ward, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “With infrastructure from INTRACOM TELECOM supported and enabled by Aptilo, DiscoveryTel will be able to achieve ROI quickly and take advantage of new opportunities.”
