STOCKHOLM — Swedish Aptilo Networks, the leading supplier of systems for operation and monitoring of wireless Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks, has together with Terawin Sdn. Bhd., a Malaysian system integrator, made an agreement with the government-owned Malaysian Internet operator JARING Communications Sdn Bhd to supply a management system for a wireless citywide network which has just recently started operating in Ipoh, the capital city in the Malaysian state of Perak.
Ipoh, which is situated 180 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur, has a total population of 673,300. The new wireless broadband city network will cover the entire city and means that private persons, companies and public authorities will be offered wireless Internet access.
The city network was inaugurated on National Day, August 31, and will in the long-term be expanded to cover large parts of the state of Perak.
“We see a strong increase in the interest for our system, thanks to a high demand of mobile broadband services. JARING, who offered the first Internet services in Malaysia 14 years ago, are now increasingly supporting broadband via Wi-Fi. In addition, they plan to offer an access network based on WiMAX and Ethernet via Powerline. Aptilo´s system therefore play a key role as a multi-purpose platform for the different access networks,” said Jan Sjönell, VP Asia at Aptilo Networks.
“By the end of this year, the penetration of broadband Internet will still be less than 10%, which means a tremendous growth potential for us,” said Dr Mohamed b. Awang Lah, CEO of JARING. “Operational stability, scalability and rich functionality were important factors when we decided to choose Aptilo´s system.”
Besides the broadband network in Ipoh, JARING already manages a smaller city network outside of Kuala Lumpur as well as a number of university campuses around the country, with Aptilo´s system.
Aptilo is one of the leading companies within solutions for administration of large-scale wireless network installations, with advanced administration of subscribers and sessions, customer care, invoicing systems and branding. The Aptilo Service Management Platform for wireless broadband is a solution for public access where users via some form of authentication and often against payment, can connect to a wireless broadband access network (Wi-Fi/WiMAX) via hot-spots or hot-zones.
Aptilo Guest Internet Access allows companies and campuses to offer guests, customers and partners a free but controlled and secure Internet access in a cost efficient way.
More than six years technical development of the three core products: Aptilo Service Management Platform, Aptilo Service Portal and Aptilo Access Controller, has resulted in a feature-rich and flexible system suitable for everyone from local Internet Service Providers to nation-wide telecom operators.
