Monthly Wi-Fi Sessions Skyrocket to 20 Million for Tier 1 Mobile Operator Using Aptilo SIM Authentication

December 23, 2013/in Carrier Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Offload /by Johan Terve

– Ten Times More Wi-Fi Users in Three Years –

STOCKHOLM – A tier 1 mobile carrier has seen an increase of nearly twenty times the number of monthly Wi-Fi sessions in the first two years and more than ten times the number of Wi-Fi users per month in three years after deploying seamless Wi-Fi offloading with SIM authentication from Aptilo Networks, the leading provider of mobile data offloading solutions.

The mobile operator is using Aptilo’s mobile data offloading solution with Aptilo SIM Authentication to shift 3G smartphone data traffic to its own nationwide carrier Wi-Fi network. Measurements show an increase in the number of Wi-Fi sessions in the first year from approximately 500,000 sessions/month to 5 million/month. In the second year sessions increased to 10 million/month, and are on track to double to 20 million sessions/month at the end of the third year (January 2014). Total growth in Wi-Fi sessions since deployment of SIM authentication is expected to reach 3,600 percent.

Prior to SIM authentication, there were approximately 200,000 users/month in the Wi-Fi network. Today there are nearly ten times more users/month (close to 2 million).

SIM authentication creates an exceptional experience for users as they shift from the 3G/LTE network to Wi-Fi. Using the device’s own SIM card for authentication – the same mechanism used in the 3G/LTE network – creates a secure, “invisible” handoff from 3G/LTE to Wi-Fi. There’s no need to login again, and the Wi-Fi network becomes as secure as the 3G/LTE network.

“SIM Authentication creates a better overall data service experience, which has led to a significant boost in Wi-Fi usage for our customers,” said Torbjorn Ward, CEO, Aptilo Networks. “We are seeing more and more carriers leveraging mobile data offloading with SIM authentication to generate revenue. Seamless Wi-Fi offloading combined with a carrier-class Wi-Fi service is becoming the gold standard for mobile operators worldwide.”

These tremendous results in increase of Wi-Fi sessions have been achieved in spite of the fact that far from all smartphones today support Wi-Fi-based SIM authentication (EAP-SIM/AKA) even if they do have a SIM card. Aptilo is bridging this gap with innovative Wi-Fi offload features that enable a secure and seamless authentication of all types of devices.
